Brad Hansen Track Scholarship

The Albert Einstein High School Athletic Hall of Fame (HOF) is proud to announce the creation of the Brad Hansen Track Scholarship which will be awarded annually to a graduating member of the AEHS Track Team deemed by the track team coaches to be the worthiest of this prestigious award.

Brad graduated from Einstein in 1981, and this award is being made in recognition of his achievements in track and his continuing support of the HOF following his induction in 2009.  His HOF induction bio reads as follows:

“While at Einstein, Brad Hansen earned a total of 9 varsity letters participating in 3 sports.  In his sophomore year, he was district champion in the 300 m hurdles.  In 1980, he won the 600-yard dash at Pennsylvania’s Lehigh relays and became the regional champion in both the 600 yard dash and the 60 m high-hurdles.  He went on to become the state champion in the 600 yard dash and state runner-up in the 60 m high-hurdles.

Hansen’s accomplishments in 1981 include regional champion in both the 110 m high-hurdles and the 300 m hurdles and 2nd in the 100 m hurdles (outdoor state championship 1981).  He was also state champion in the 300 m hurdles and 3rd in the 400 m dash.  Additionally, he won the 300 m hurdles at the AAU Jr. Olympics.  In all, Brad broke 8 school records and helped Einstein become Maryland State champions in track and field twice.

Brad accepted a 4-year track scholarship to Marshall University where he earned 12 varsity letters.  His greatest athletic achievement was winning the bronze medal for 800 m at the 1983 Southern Conference indoor track championships.  In 1990, Brad graduated with a Master’s in Food Science and Technology from Mississippi State University and married his wife Lydia.  He is a winemaker and lives in Virginia with Lydia and their sons Christian and Rhys.

Brad continues to run competitively and is nationally ranked in his age group in the 800 m run."

Since 2022, Brad has been battling ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), which is a fatal, progressive neuromuscular disease with no current treatments or cure.

The HOF wishes to congratulate Brad on this recognition and thank him for his continuing support for the HOF and the student athletes at Einstein.  The first award will be made in the spring of 2024, and it is envisioned that it will be funded by donations made to the HOF specifically for the Brad Hansen Track Scholarship.
